Planning to take a short break from work,27-year-old Shalika Gogia,HR manager with IBM,joined her husband on a trip to Kerala. She was among the 12 people from the Capital who lost their lives in the streamer mishap in Kerela on Wednesday evening.
Her husband,Amit Gogia, was in Kerala on an official tour where Shalika joined him on Saturday. The couple was scheduled to return on Wednesday itself but with the long weekend ahead, they chose to stay back till October 3,Neena Gogia,Amits aunt said.
Amit told us the driver of the double-decker streamer took a sharp turn and lost control, due to which the streamer toppled. The government-run streamer was apparently overcrowded, with 78 people on board against its permitted capacity of 60, Neena Gogia added.
We have had no help from either Delhi or Gurgaon authorities, and no information on which flight Amit is returning. No one bothered to call and inform us, Amits elder sister alleged.
Rishab Sehgal,Shalikas youngest brother, who is pursuing his diploma in computer hardware from Amritsar, said his sister knew how to swim. According to Amit, when the streamer toppled,Shalika got trapped under it. He told us that when she was rescued, she had a pulse. If medical aid was available, she might have been saved. Amit said there were no lifeguards or lifejackets available on the boat, alleged Rajnesh Chaddha,Amits brother-in-law.
The couple got married on February 10 last year. Amit is employed with Swiss firm Medela. Shalikas father expired four years ago. She is survived by three siblings.
The family now awaits Amits return, who will head back with the body on a chartered plane late on Thursday night. Amit is shattered. Shalika was an ideal daughter-in-law. He had taken upon himself the responsibility of his family after his parents passed away, added Neena.
