As violence continued into Saturday night, varying versions of what triggered the violence left police confounded. All revolved around a ‘Mata ki Chowki’ temporarily set up in Block 20. A senior police officer said police knew of the rumours and were investigating them.

Nishu Singh, a resident: A Mata ki Chowki was built in early October before a 11-day jagran. However, some youths stole the structure worth
Rs 60,000 and later two women who had come to worship at the chowki were fired at. The bullets narrowly missed them.

Shahab, a resident:  A Mata ki Chowki was built for a jagran in early October. Then, on Eid, the Hindus did not allow the Muslims to perform the customary sacrifice and threatened them with dire consequences. Minor incidents of violence continued till the flare-up last night.

Hari, a resident:  A Muslim boy desecrated the Chowki on Diwali night, though we do not know who. Then the situation became tense. Hindu residents retaliated by desecrating the Masjid. Then, some miscreants were seen drinking near the chowki which angered the Hindus.

Imran, a resident: After the Chowki was built, Hindu residents began throwing their weight around and we were not allowed to perform the sacrifice during Eid. Then, some miscreants came drunk into the masjid a few nights ago.
