How AI will help keep Delhi’s ‘European standard’s roads pothole-free

Officials added that they are planning to deploy dedicated bikes and cars which will be equipped with cameras and sensors from start point to end. These cameras will be connected via a software, through which the AI dashboard will detect the issues on the stretch.

Soon, the 41 km roads redeveloped along the lines of European standards under the streetscaping projects will be maintained and closely monitored by a high-tech artificial intelligence-modelled system to report in case of any potholes, damaged roads, missing median, cattle invasion, accident or any water/sewer leakages on these revamped stretches, said Public Works Department (PWD) officials.

“This is a first of its kind project being explored by any road agency in Delhi. Now, we have deployed guards and inspection vehicles to take rounds but if a road is broken or a light is not working, repairs can take up to two days. Also, incidents of theft and encroachments have taken place and expensive statues and benches are installed on these stretches. So, through this AI system, a software and a dashboard will be created to closely monitor these 16 stretches,” said a senior official from streetscaping division.

Officials added that they are planning to deploy dedicated bikes and cars which will be equipped with cameras and sensors from start point to end. These cameras will be connected via a software, through which the AI dashboard will detect the issues on the stretch.

“The AI will provide a daily heat map of drivers showing the areas and distances covered by the agency’s operation. It will set up weekly standup meetings to track progress,” said the officials.

Apart from the road monitoring, the department also plans to use AI to track attendance to keep a track of workers deployed on site, monitoring work on the ground to check whether the work has been carried out. “It will also have functions of support tickets for detecting damages and forward it to the agency creating support tickets for resolution,” said the official.

To monitor workers and attendance, the department has decided to geo-tag uniforms of the worker.

“The captured data will be stored in a shared database which can be assessed anytime anywhere. It will be the responsibility of the agency to tag all workers employed for the upkeep of the roads so as to bring them into the geo fields,” said the official. The agency will do a geographic information system mapping locations designated by PWD and update the maps as per municipality boundary changes during the period of performance, said the officials.

Officials added that they aim to monitor complete right of way of the road where AI can capture anything from missing dustbins, unlit traffic lights, invisible sign boards, garbage, open drains, discoloured speed-breakers, to missing hedge lines, horticulture defects, and road paint markings. Officials said they have floated tenders for the project, which is on a pilot basis on 16 stretches. After analysing its results, the system will be expanded for all roads under PWD spread over 1,446 km.
