To Be Continued…

When Salman Khan swaggered on to the big screen as Chulbul Pandey in his brother Arbaaz Khan’s debut production Dabangg.

After the success of Dabangg, talks of a sequel keep the excitement growing

When Salman Khan swaggered on to the big screen as Chulbul Pandey in his brother Arbaaz Khan’s debut production Dabangg, the actor walked right into an unprecedented opening, with the film earning Rs 48.5 crore in the first weekend alone. The box-office coup — the biggest ever in Indian cinematic history—had the Dabangg team plotting to make its sequel even before it had completed its first week run.

Though the buzz around the sequel is massive,director-writer Abhinav Kashyap is yet to zero in on a specific idea. “I don’t even know what my next script is going to be — whether it would be a sequel or something else. The other day,we met at Salman’s house and discussed possibilities. One of them is moving the film’s location to a city like Mumbai,” he states. However, the director is certain about a few things, like not leaving Sonu Sood out in the sequel, which will either be called Dabangg 2 or Robin Hood Pandey . As Chedi Singh,Sood garnered rave reviews. “Clichéd as it may sound,we came up with a situation where Chedi Singh’s twin comes into the picture,” says Kashyap. Sood is excited about the possible sequel. “I have even thought of a name for my character,Ganpat Singh,” he says.

The movie saw the debut of Shatrughan Sinha’s daughter Sonakshi, who too believes that a sequel would be just the right thing to hold on to the hype. “Dabangg 2 is a long way from now but I wouldn’t like to change anything about my character Rajo. The character didn’t require me to dance in this film, but if need be in the sequel,I will definitely be up for a longer jig.”

While Salman had predicted that the movie’s simplicity will work in its favour,Arbaaz hopes to stick to the formula in the sequel. “At some levels we get a certain character right. But Chulbul was perfect at every level. It is the audience who wants us to make the sequel,” he says.

The sequel will take at least two years because of Salman’s prior commitments. “I am not aiming to make it bigger or costlier than Dabangg ,just better,” he says.
