The recovery of at least three letters from important installations in the New Delhi district, threatening ‘untoward’ activities at the sites they were found, has raised security alert in the areas.

Police sources said while two of the threat letters were found in the Darbar Hall inside the Bangla Sahib Gurudwara — one of them on Friday — another was found near the Parliament House. A bomb disposal squad and a dog squad were sent to the Gurudwara on Friday afternoon after the third and the most recent call about a threat letter came in. All the letters have been recovered in the last fortnight.

Interestingly, each of the three letters had a Rs 10 note attached to it to act as a bait for someone to pick it up. “Whoever has placed the letters wanted to make sure it is picked up,” a senior police officer deputed at the New Delhi district said.

“As every note threatened of ‘rogue’ activities,we sought assistance of the Delhi Police’s Special Cell, which is a skilled unit. We are also carrying on our own efforts to find the culprit,” the police officer said.

A team of sleuths constituted to conduct a probe, found that all letters bore the name and phone number of a certain individual.

The man named in the notes has been questioned by the police, officers said.

Officers, however, added that the case is being probed from all angles.

We have taken adequate action after each call about such letters to thwart any untoward incident,” the police officer added. The officer also said they would seek assistance from handwriting experts,if needed.

Joint Commissioner of Police (New Delhi Range) Dharmendra Kumar confirmed that three or four such letters have been found. “We are looking into the matter.”
