On Saturday evening,Anil Mangla,a resident of Sector-19 here, checked the padlocks after one of his employees shut his jewellery shop. With the shop remaining closed on Sundays,it was to be just another weekend for the jeweller.

Only, the week began on a terrible note.

On Monday morning, nothing seemed amiss from outside when Mangla opened his shop,at New Bhoor Colony in Sector-29. While the shutters were intact, reality struck within seconds: the display shelves inside the showroom stood ransacked, with jewellery valued at approximately Rs 3 lakh looted.

According to the police, the assailants dug a two-meter-long tunnel from the manhole outside the showroom to gain entry by breaking the cemented floor.

The police are still puzzled how the burglars managed to dig a tunnel in the busy market — on a street that witnesses traffic throughout the day,and with a residential colony right opposite. Locals said police patrolling in the area is “good”.

The police suspect the assailants dug the tunnel sometime during Saturday night, after the shop was closed.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Shashank Anand said: “There are four or five shops in this row and a mobile phone store, adjacent to the jeweller’s,was open till 10 pm that night. But owners of all these shops said they saw nothing out of place.” The police have taken some evidence from the crime scene and will soon nab the culprits,he asserted.

According to DCP Anand, the burglars ransacked jewellery in the display shelves and took away 7 kg silver and two gold chains, weighing 35 grams approximately. “The shop has a good strongroom and the burglars could not tamper with it,” he said. “We have registered a case under Sections 380 and 457 of Indian Penal Code, for theft and trespassing.”

Asked if the police suspect an insider job in the burglary,DCP Anand said that it was too early to speculate on those lines.
