The drummer who walked on the stage was almost as tall as the drums. With two sticks in his hands,he hopped up on the seat and began the performance with the basic rhythm,boom-pop,boom-pop,boom-pop. This was nine-year-old Mehmood,the son of a ragpicker from Delhi,who is part of the band Krish that also includes 13-year-old Krish.
The duo performed at Shri Ram College of Commerce on Friday evening,as part of CanCussion 2011. Organised by Hindustan Tin Works,the event was a competition for percussionists to show their skills on the drums made from recycled tins. There were three more groups comprising ragpickers,called Rock,Jazz and a bhajan group from the NGO Chintan.
Bagging the prize for their rendition of Tune mere janaa ab nahi janaa,was Krish along with 23-year-old dhol player Mahinder Bhatt from Shadipur. The winners will perform at the finale of the CanVironment Week,that will be held on December 14 at Hotel Surya in New Friends Colony.
