Tharoor could be quizzed on IPL row

Shashi Tharoor was also questioned in connection with the death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar.

A day after Congress leader Shashi Tharoor was questioned in connection with the death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar, the Delhi Police on Tuesday said it would probe the IPL angle in the case if need be.

Police said questioning of Pushkar’s close friends has indicated that she was upset with Tharoor over her name surfacing in the IPL controversy.

“The questioning was done primarily to seek details of the incident and events after the death. If need be, he will be questioned about the IPL controversy too. The main objective is to reach to the bottom of the truth,” Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi said.

The IPL controversy surfaced in early 2010 when Tharoor was the Minister of State for External Affairs. There were allegations that he had misused his office to ensure that Rs 70 crore, which was equivalent to 19 per cent equity in IPL Kochi franchise Rendezvous Sports, was paid to Pushkar.

Pushkar, who was Tharoor’s friend then, had refuted the allegations and also denied that she was acting as the frontperson to Tharoor in the Kochi IPL franchise.
