Talking point with supriya pilgaonkar

It is more my temperament. I prefer to do one serial at a time and one sort of character at a time.

Over the last few years, you have been doing one serial at a time. Is this a kind of strategy?
It is more my temperament. I prefer to do one serial at a time and one sort of character at a time.
Anyway, television does not have much to offer these days in terms of content. Most serials have the same kind of scripts and storylines. So I don’t mind waiting a while, doing theatre or films in the interim.

What about NDTV Imagine’s Basera excited you?
The subject, the content and the fact that after a long period of time a serial has been made that is targeted at the woes of senior citizens.

Take us through your character in the serial.
I play the role of Manda Deshmukh, who is a housewife in a Maharashtrian household. She has two daughters and a son. The story revolves around her unconditional love for her family and the difficulties she goes through when nobody realises nor appreciates her contribution.

Going by the storyline, looks like this serial adheres to the old school of television.
I would think so. The values are the same as the yesteryear serials like Hum Log or Buniyaad, but the presentation is more recent. Also, the story of one family is intertwined with the stories of other families in the serial.

Is this role similar to the role you played in Radha Ki Betiyaan, your last serial on television?
Not really, only my age group is the same. There I played a widow; here I play a housewife.

Comedy has been your forte ever since Tu Tu Main Main. So how come we don’t see you in too many comedy serials?
I am not offered any comic roles on television and the ones I am offered are of poor quality. For a comedy serial to be successful, there has to be a good script. And that seems to be lacking on television. But honestly,I am itching to be a part of a comedy series. I just hope it happens soon.

Your husband Sachin Pilgaonkar and you were last seen together on television during Nach Baliye. When do we see you next?
We do a lot of Marathi films together, but nothing has come our way on Hindi television. There is no point in pushing for it,but I am definitely waiting for it to happen.

What about films?
A couple of Marathi films, and I have also done a small role in Nikhil Advani’s Na Jaane Kahaan Se Aayi Hai.
