With Delhi University allowing India Under-19 cricket captain Unmukt Chand to move to the second year despite not fulfilling the universitys attendance requirements, four other students of St Stephens College, who come under sports quota, have moved the Delhi High Court for similar relief.
During the hearing on Friday,Justice G S Sistani told the students to approach DU Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Singh within three days and also directed the V-C to decide the issue in ten days.
Calling his case rarest of rare,Delhi University had earlier allowed Unmukt to move to second year and take his first-year exams in the forthcoming semesters. He will also be allowed to clear the backlog papers from the first two semesters.
Unmukt was barred from taking the second semester exams citing shortage of attendance. DU rules mandate a student to have at least 33.3 per cent attendance in an academic session after all exemptions.
In Unmukts case,Union Ministers Kapil Sibal and Ajay Maken had intervened and asked the Vice-Chancellor and St Stephens principal Valson Thampu to look into the matter.
A statement issued by the Association of Old Stephanians said Unmukts case should act as a catalyst to ensure that sportspersons do not suffer on the academic front.
It is requested that all sportspersons detained due to lack of attendance may be considered for suitable exemption as in the case of Unmukt, till such facilities are in place, the statement read.
