SUV crashes into college wall in UP’s Sambhal, 20-year-old groom among 8 killed

Locals who witnessed the accident said the Bolero, carrying people headed to Badaun for a wedding, was speeding. It overturned and then rammed into the walls of the college, the police said.

A 20-year-old’s wedding procession in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal ended in tragedy on Friday evening as eight people, including a three-year-old girl, were killed after an SUV with 10 people in it lost control and rammed into the boundary wall of a college.

The police identified the deceased as Suraj Pal, the groom, his sister-in-law, Asha, 26, her three-year-old daughter Aishwarya, Ganesh, 29, Ravi, 28, Sachin, 22, Madhu, 20, and Komal, 16. While Suraj, Asha, Aishwarya, Ganesh and Sachin died on the spot, Komal, Madhu, and Ravi died during treatment in Aligarh, the police said.

“A Bolero had rammed into the walls of Janta Inter College. Those seated inside were going to attend a wedding along with the groom. We reached there and, with the help of locals, rescued those inside,” she said.

“Himanshi, 6, and Deva, 20, are undergoing treatment, and Deva is said to be critical,” said Sharma.

She said that locals who saw the accident told the police that the vehicle was speeding and overturned, after which it rammed into the walls of the college.

“We have referred those injured to Aligarh,” Sharma added.

Krishan Kumar Bishnoi, Superintendent of Police, Sambhal, said that the vehicle was completely damaged.

“We used a JCB and cut the car to rescue those inside and admitted those on board to the hospital. Five died on the spot, and five were admitted. Three died during the treatment,” he said.

Bishnoi said that the family members were residents of Har Govindpur village in Sambhal district, and the groom and his family were en route to Badaun.

“It happened due to the mistake of the driver that the vehicle overturned and hit the walls of the college. We have sent the bodies for post-mortem, and further investigation is underway,” SP Bishnoi said.
