Hundreds of students and teachers gathered outside the Human Resource Development Ministry at Shastri Bhawan on Wednesday to protest against the implementation of the Central Universities Act and the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) prescribed by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Students at the protest said they were opposed to the Central Universities Act as it would compromise the autonomy of universities.

“If the act comes into force, all universities will have to follow a common admission system and syllabus. This will kill the autonomy of central universities like Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University, their uniqueness and respective areas of strength in teaching and research,” DU student Rahul Kumar said.

Students and teachers from various organisations like All India Students’ Association (AISA), All India Students Federation, Students Federation of India among others also joined the protest.

Students said, like the four-year undergraduate programme, CBCS will dilute the quality of Honours courses and overburden students and teachers with a concoction of uninformed foundation, core and elective papers.

“The founders of CBCS don’t seem to know the meaning of an ‘inter-disciplinary approach’ . Merely offering students a bouquet of courses to choose from does not qualify as ‘inter-disciplinary’. CBCS offers only an illusion of choice, and will be yet another experiment on students,” vice-president of DU’s AISA’s unit, Ankit Pandey, said.
