Ahead of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections scheduled for September, university authorities on Wednesday held a high-level meeting and warned that, among other measures, vehicles with tinted windows or missing number plates will be immediately seized if found on the campus.

The warning comes as part of the university’s efforts to enforce strict anti-defacement measures for the DUSU polls. Candidates have been instructed to use only handmade posters, within strictly monitored expenditure limits.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the university said, “The student representatives took the note seriously and assured that there shall be no defacement in the DUSU elections.”

According to the statement, the student leaders have requested that the university install a “Wall of Democracy”, designated for campaign material, in each college, and the administration has agreed to convey this request to all colleges.

Last year, the Delhi High Court had rapped the university over the defacement of public property during the election campaigning, following which the result declaration was postponed by a month.

The student union election usually witnesses fly-posting, graffiti-covered walls, and buntings fluttering across trees and lampposts. Vehicles with tinted windows or missing number plates are also a common sight during the student rallies and processions.

DU’s Chief Election Officer, members of the Proctorial Board, the station house officer of the Maurice Nagar police, and DUSU office-bearers attended the meeting, held at the proctor’s office in Maurice Nagar.

Later, the Proctorial Board and the Chief Election Officer had an online meeting with college principals, hostel wardens, heads of departments, station house officers, assistant commissioners of police, and deputy commissioners of police.
