Strong winds, thunderstorm lash Delhi-NCR

The maximum temperature recorded on Thursday was 36.9 degrees Celsius, three degrees below the normal.

Strong winds and a thunderstorm lashed Delhi-NCR Thursday night, after a day when cloudy skies kept the maximum temperature below 40 degrees Celsius.

The weather observatory at Palam recorded a maximum wind speed of around 58 kmph along with rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had warned of gusty winds of around 40 to 60 kmph over Delhi-NCR.

The maximum temperature recorded on Thursday was 36.9 degrees Celsius, three degrees below the normal, and a little more than the 34.7 degrees recorded on Wednesday. Rainfall comes close on the heels of heatwave conditions that were recorded in parts of the city earlier this week. The maximum temperature had been a little above 46 degrees at some observatories earlier this week.

An active western disturbance has been affecting northwest India and is accompanied by moisture supply from the Arabian Sea, according to an IMD bulletin issued on Thursday, resulting in rainfall and thunderstorms.

The western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India till Friday, going by the IMD forecast.

Partly cloudy skies and very light rainfall along with thundershowers at a few places are on the forecast for Delhi on Friday.

The maximum temperature is likely to be around 36 degrees on Friday. While the possibility of very light rain remains on the forecast for Saturday, Sunday is set to remain dry. Partly cloudy skies over the next six days could keep the maximum temperature below 40 degrees – it could range from 35 to 38 degrees Celsius over the next six days, according to the IMD forecast.

A fresh western disturbance is expected to affect northwest India from May 29 onwards, and Delhi could see very light rainfall and thundershowers in a few places on May 29, according to the IMD.
