The Delhi University (DU) research student who submitted telephonic recordings to the investigation agency of the alleged conversations between her, St Stephen’s Principal Valson Thampu and the professor she accused of harassing her, did so on the “advice” given to her by a DU professor, sources said. The alleged conversation, sources claimed, was recorded through a mobile application.

Sources said the professor had advised the student based on his “past experience” — he had earlier witnessed the principle trying to “protect the institution” in many instances.

The student — who had filed an FIR against college professor Satish Kumar alleging sexual harassment — has given the Delhi Police the alleged recordings of four meetings between her, Thampu and Kumar held on January 7, 9 and 10 this year. She has submitted her mobile device as evidence to strengthen her case that Thampu shielded Kumar, sources added.

“A professor told her (the student) that she could never guess what the principal’s aim is — he could either be trying to help or damage her (reputation). So he told the girl that there is no harm in recording the conversations. The professor had seen cases in the past, where the principal tried to protect the institution. Based on that, he advised her to make a recording,” a source said.
