Musician Akshai Sarin will be partnering with Chemical Brothers for a concert ahead of the Singapore Formula One Grand Prix
He is one of the few Indian electronica acts to headline with top musicians like Herbie Hancock,Beyonce,Black Eyed Peas and No Doubt, but off-stage Akshai Sarin is a man of very few words. When he does speak though, its his wit that comes across. Its nice to be performing with these guys. But I am never overwhelmed. I was sharing my swimming pool with the Black Eyed Peas guys and lived in the same neighbourhood of the No Doubt bassist. Why would I be overwhelmed? laughs the DJ,singer and composer. Sarin,28 will be the only Indian to perform at the Formula One Grand Prix 2010 in Singapore today. This is the second time Mumbai-based Sarin is performing at the hugely anticipated annual event.
Sarin started learning music when he was seven. I found my piano and tabla classes extremely boring. The music was too structured for a more spontaneous outlet. I would connect laptops with walkmans and try to create a turntable effect, says Sarin, who is already in Singapore. More than music,it is the idea of playing around with it that works for me, says Sarin, who believes in using gadgets to manipulate the quality of sound. The musician released his first album when he was 18 and managed a slew of artistes in London. He now owns a music label called Rebirth Records.
Post the concert,Sarin will be collaborating with Chemical Brothers for an album. But his latest project, which will be a combination of electronic, house, lounge, trance, dubstep and reggae,is all set for a release at the end of this year. The tracks in the compilation will feature collaborations with artistes like Thomas Gold,Moonbeam,Andy Moor,Yahel and The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, among others, says Sarin who also remixed tracks for Karan Johars Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kaal. I thought Bollywood was the last thing that I would want to do. But it was quite fun. If you take a few elements and do a good job of fusing them around,it works, he says.
