To identify and remove bottlenecks from traffic intersections, the Delhi Public Works Department, through Indian Academy of Highways Engineers (IAHE), has created a citywide hybrid traffic simulation model for Delhi.
“This is globally one of the biggest hybrid citywide traffic simulation models that will help assess future proposals by quantifying the benefits of reducing delays and queue lengths at intersections,” said a PWD official. The reduction in travel times and queue lengths will help the city to reduce emissions and enhance urban mobility, said officials.
The model is based on a road safety audit of 103 black spots and a detailed study and intervention of 896 intersections.
“Latest advanced LiDAR Technologies were used to create a hybrid traffic simulation platform of all macro, meso and micro levels. There has also been a comprehensive study and proposed rectification for Crash Fatalities Report, 2021, which included Peeragarhi Chowk, Mukarba Chowk, and Chirag Dilli, to name a few,” said the official.
Officials said the road-owning agencies could use this model on this framework and see when their design will benefit the public at large.
“The finer level details required for the model development, including existing street design, traffic data, street furniture, and utilities, have been captured. The traffic data captured includes travel times, speed and delay data, and queue lengths at all the major intersections in Delhi,” said the official.
The PWD thinks that the model would also help in testing and validity, proposed drawings and designs of the road infrastructure, thus reducing the flaws due to faulty designs and drawings.
