Five skulls and 34 bones were discovered behind the mortuary near the railway tracks close to Hindon river here on Monday. The mortuary employees first spotted the remains and informed the police, who then helped dig them out.
Retaining caution in coming to any conclusion at this moment,Ghaziabad (City) Superintendent of Police Anant Dev said it appears the bones and skulls are of unclaimed bodies buried improperly. He added that they might have surfaced following the rains over the weekend. A mortuary employee said,We were coming out of the mortuary when one of us saw a skull poking out of the waste accrued at the back of the mortuary.
SP Anant Dev confirmed that the police found skulls and bones but added that this happens every time it rains. This could be because of improper burial of the body,or it some animal might have dug the ground and took out the skulls and bones, he reasoned. Poorly buried body parts, like bones, often come to the surface during monsoons, when the rain washes away the top soil.
People around the area said the bones and skulls might belong to unidentified persons who were not claimed by their family members,or whose family members the police were unable to trace. Mohammed Zafar,a fruit-seller who sits across the bridge on Hindon, said the bodies belong to unidentified victims of accidents. The police often bury such bodies in a hurry, and the remains surface after a spell of rain, he said.
To this,a senior officer said,We bury unidentified bodies properly. But there are instances when relatives do not bury the bodies properly.
