Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala said that the cave-in was caused due to "natural causes". (Express Photo)Two days after a cave-in at Sohna elevated highway, Gurgaon Metropolitan Development Authority engineers said that they would repair the sinkhole in three days.
A GMDA spokesperson informed that work is in progress on the site. “The team is presently curbing any further flow of water in the caved-in site and strengthening of the manhole will be taken up. This will be followed by the road repair work,” the spokesperson added.
According to officials, a 5-metre-deep and 4-metre-wide sinkhole was formed on one of the carriageways in the highway near the SD Adarsh Vidyalaya in Subhash Chowk. The reason attributed to the incident was the collapse of the sewage drain and the GMDA has asked the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to inspect, repair and strengthen the existing manholes, officials said. “We have extended assistance in the form of machines to GMDA and they will repair it in a few days,” said an NHAI official.
A GMDA engineer said that a major mishap was avoided as the sewer line that passes through Subhash Chowk to Behrampur STP, which resulted in water seepage, was closed two months ago. “This drain was built over 15 years ago and needed strengthening. The seepage from the collapse resulted in the sinkhole, but since it was closed, we avoided a major incident,” the engineer added.
Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala said that the cave-in was caused due to “natural causes”. “Rs 4,000 crore has been used for building roads by the government…Rural connectivity has been prioritised and under the PM’s gramin sadak yojana, 2500 km of roads have been built so far. The NHAI has delivered roads on time…this is a sign of good governance,” he said.
The lane in the six-lane flyover was cordoned off for traffic by the NHAI on Sunday. The elevated road was opened to the public in July 2022.
