‘She was recognised for her work in Bhind Kendriya Vidyalaya’

“She wanted to become a doctor but after our father passed away, things changed. She joined the teaching profession and started working at a Kendra Vidyalaya in 1982,” she said.

Rekha Saxena, who was travelling to Delhi to receive the Presidential medal for excellence in teaching, wanted to become a doctor, her sister Dr Manju Verma said.

“She wanted to become a doctor but after our father passed away, things changed. She joined the teaching profession and started working at a Kendra Vidyalaya in 1982,” she said.

Verma said her sister never married and one of the reasons for this was her single-minded devotion to the profession.

Her efforts were recognised when she received the National Incentive Award in 2000, said Verma. This award is given to teachers for excellence and for “being pacesetters in the field of education”. Kendriya Vidyalaya rewards its teachers by way of incentive awards.

Verma said it was her service during the years 1997-2000 that brought her recognition. “She was sent to a Kendra Vidyalaya in Bhind as the place had gained notoriety for cheating during examinations,” she said. Verma said she enforced discipline in that school.

After a couple of stints in different places, she joined the Kendriya Vidyalaya at Air Force Station in Maharajpura in Gwalior as principal in 2011.

Verma said the entire family was happy after they heard the news of her sister being awarded on Teacher’s Day in Delhi.
