Security has been strengthened across major monuments and historical places in Delhi on Friday, a day after hostilities escalated between India and Pakistan, a police officer said.

Major tourist attractions like Qutub Minar and Lotus Temple saw extra deployment of Delhi Police and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel. An officer said security at Qutub Minar was increased from noon, when the crowds start coming in.

On Friday morning, India Gate was relatively free of crowds, with police officers patrolling the high-security C-Hexagon area.

A police officer said at India Gate, attempts are being made for minimal crowd formation to maintain law and order. Police, however, said avoiding excess crowds is a routine law and order exercise and is not specific to the current ‘high-alert’ declared in the Capital.

In North Delhi, a police officer said extra patrolling has been deployed across vital installations, with a battalion of CISF and district police personnel stepping up vigil around Lal Quila, Metro stations, and major markets in the area.

Paramilitary commandos and SWAT teams have been deployed in key areas of the New Delhi district, and police personnel in other districts, to conduct extra security checks, a senior police officer said.

Security deployment has also been heightened at the CGO Complex, which houses sensitive government offices, in South Delhi.

All Deputy Commissioners of Police have been asked to be on alert and hold mock drill exercises in coordination with the Civil Defence, Delhi Fire Services (DFS), and other government authorities.

To ensure public safety measures across the district, Bomb Disposal Squads (BDS) conducted drills in congested areas in the Capital. “BDS teams undertook vigilance exercises against potential threats by conducting checks at congested markets, malls, and other high-density areas,” DCP (Southwest) Surender Chaudhary had said on Thursday.

Security at Metro stations across Delhi was also stepped up with CISF personnel deployed for extra vigil. “Nine CISF personnel — seven men and two women — are deployed at the Mayur Vihar Phase 1 Metro station. Around 41 CCTV cameras will be monitoring the station to ensure the security of commuters,” DCP (East) Abhishek Dhania had said earlier.

On Thursday night, anti-aircraft guns were deployed across the Capital’s borders. The Delhi Police headquarters also issued an order stating that no leaves would be granted to its officers till further directions.
