Former NASA Astronaut visits DPS R K Puram
It was a special day for DPS R K Puram as the renowned astronaut Joan Higginbotham visited the school. Higginbotham is the third African-American woman to go into space. She began her career in 1987 at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC),Florida,as a Payload Electrical Engineer in the Electrical and Telecommunications Systems Division. She has undertaken several special assignments and actively participated in 53 space shuttle launches during her 9-year tenure at Kennedy Space Center. She was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in April 1996.
Higginbotham was accompanied by Chris Barber,Director of International Space Science Educational Trust (ISSET),UK; Sandeep Joshi,Director,Mission Apollo and Sunil Gokhale,COO,Mission Apollo. The Principal,DR Saini extended a warm welcome to all the guests.
Sandeep Joshi,Director of Mission Apollo addressed the audience and introduced them to Mission Apollo and the various opportunities for students to be part of it through the Astronauts Camp and the Star Trek programmes organized by Mission Apollo along with ISSET,UK. Chris Barber asked students to concentrate on their academic performance so that they could have a wider range of career options to choose from.
Higginbotham addressed the gathering and showed an audio-visual presentation of life inside a space shuttle. She shared her experiences during the space journey in 2006 with the students,something she described as simply incredible. Higginbotham answered various queries of students ranging from space walking to everyday activities like eating and moving about in space.
The Vice-Principal,Shobha Mehta delivered the vote of thanks. It was a once-in-a lifetime experience for the students,one which they would cherish all their life.

The Bluebells School Fiesta is a combination of creativity,talent and enthusiasm. Celebrating the trophy given by Border Security Force 32 years ago,Bluebells School International organizes a youth fiesta every year. An amazing cultural bonanza of the children,by the children and for the children,this three day festival is the successful culmination of days of hard work and constant emotional highs and lows.
This year,the themes of BSF were folk styles and the seven deadly sins. From Indian to Afro-Cuban to Japanese to South African,the whole gamut of folk was explored on day one through the medium of song and dance. Day two saw poets and actors take the stage. Each house represented their interpretation of the sins with the underlying message that each of us has the power to overcome these.
Judged by experts in the field of performing arts and folk styles such as Sushmit Bose,Bharat Shankar,Gilles Chuyen,Manoj Pant,Ramesh Thakur,Andrew Hoffman and Om Gupta,the best performances of day one and two were showcased on day three. On the third day the event was graced with the auspicious presence of founder Principal,now director,G Soni and the principal Suman Kumar. The chief guest for the day was Anjali Srivastava,wife of director general of BSF and the president of the BSF Welfare Society. The guest of honour was Swapna Bhattacharya,an ex-teacher and a musician. Apart from discovering the traditional art of folklore,students also discovered their potential as team players,managers and artists. All-in-all,the event was a fitting tribute to culture and creativity.
Kalka Public School remembers its founders
The 36 th Founders day celebration was held on April 30,2010 at Kalka Public school (KPS) in its playground. To celebrate the journey a series of programmes were organised on the theme My Spirit My Alma Mater (realising the legacy of KPS from KG to PG). The highlight of the day was the constructive parody that unfolded not only the journey of the institution but the growth of each and every student who seeks shelters under the wings of KPS.
The day beautifully materialized the adage Education is a mission in itself. The principal and the vice-principal expressed their views and congratulated the students expressing their tremendous joy. The newsletter titled NIKUNJ was also released by the principal. A lot of activities like origami, flower making,slogan writing,uniform designing,related to the theme were organised for students of classes 6 th to 12 th . The children of classes 3 rd ,5 th ,7 th and 10 th who secured 100% attendance were awarded. The day ended with the distribution of sweets.
St Marks School students connects with Finland,Estonia
This summer vacation it was time for the St. Marks Sr. Sec Public School (SMS),Meera Bagh students to experience foreign shores.
Fifteen students with a teacher,Mrs Geeta Rajan visited Kaarina High School,Finland where they stayed with the host families. During their one week stay,they attended Finnish and Swedish classes at the school. Also the students participated in a variety of activities. They experienced the traditional Finnish Sauna,a nature trail walk,a guided tour to the neighbouring city of Turku,participated in treasure hunt,the Amazing Race and the Finnish Baseball. Thus,the students got a real taste of Finnish culture. The students also feel fortunate that they got the privilege to visit Turku,Finland and Tallinn,Estonia both of which have been declared as the Cultural Capitals Of Europe 2011.
