On Wednesday, at 8 pm, house number 92 of AP block in Shalimar Bagh erupted in celebrations. This is the house of Rekha Gupta, the new chief minister of Delhi.

Following the BJP announcing her name as its CM pick on Wednesday night, Rekha met Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to stake claim to form the government. When she got home later, she was met by a sea of supporters.

Climbing atop a car, she addressed the gathering. “All those who have come here, my seniors, my friends thank you to all,” she said. “You have seen my struggle and supported me, especially in these 10 years… The responsibility I have is the result of your love and blessings. PM Narendra Modi considered me capable enough to bring me to this position… I want all of you to come to the oath-taking ceremony tomorrow.”

Speaking to The Indian Express, Rekha said: “This is Modi ji’s vision for women-led development. He gave a chance to a regular girl from a regular family. My priorities will be to meet the commitments we have made in Delhi and work on the vision of PM Modi for Delhi. All schemes started for women by the PM, we will implement them all.”

“The team of 48 MLAs will be working towards that. I will work with capability and honesty,” she added. “Delhi is going to get a new chapter of development and Delhiites will get their rights.”

Right before Rekha arrived, people from across Shalimar Bagh and Pitampura as well as BJP workers from the area were dancing on the streets to the beats of the dhol and bursting fire-crackers.

Inside Rekha’s house, on the ground floor of a four-storey building, her relatives and friends danced to the chants of ‘Sabko Dekha Aa Gayi Rekha’ and ‘Narendra Modi zindabad’.

Manish Gupta, Rekha’s husband, said he is excited to work alongside his wife. “I’m thankful to PM Modi and I am looking forward to supporting my wife. Currently, I am waiting for her to come back so that we can celebrate this new role together,” he told The Indian Express.

Manish is the business proprietor of Nikunj Enterprises.

Rekha’s mother-in-law Meera Gupta told The Indian Express: “I am elated that she won. Whatever the AAP couldn’t do, she will. She is a good daughter-in-law and will prove to be a good CM too.”

Her neighbours recollected the work she did in the constituency.

Rishabh Jain (30) and Sandeep Jain (45) from Shalimar Bagh, BJ block, said she is the ideal CM candidate. “We want her to take care of Delhi the way she took care of this area of Shalimar Bagh and Pitampura,” they said.

Yogendra Gupta, poorva mandal adhyaksh of the BJP from Shalimar Bagh, said: “I have worked with her from the start. She did development work in Pitampura, got LED lights installed, developed parks, looked after stray animals and collaborated with RWAs as well.”

Tarachand Sharma, a resident of the nearby AL Block of Shalimar Bagh, said her victory is the result of her work. “She fixed street lights and improved the conditions of parks. Whenever you call her, she will come to solve problems. Vo ekdum zameen se judi hui hai (she is connected to the ground),” said 42-year-old Sharma, who works at Delhi University.

Thodi nazdeeki bani rahe, jaise abhi vo humari baat sun leti thi, vaise hi aage bhi nazdeeki bane rahe (We hope that the closeness that we have with her doesn’t change. The way she listens to us right now, that shouldn’t change),” said Dashrathprasad, who works at a steel plant. He is a BJP panna pramukh and campaigned for Rekha. He lives in the nearby slum in AO Block.
