At a time of heightened police presence in the Capital ahead of the Commonewealth Games, two robberies with strikingly similar modus operandi — assailants impersonating as cops — were reported from the Capital on Saturday night.

In the first incident,a man was robbed by three persons allegedly posing as police officers near the Dhaula Kuan flyover at 10.30 pm. The incident occurred just metres away from the Dhaula Kuan police station.

Hemant Kumar Sharma,a Srinivaspuri resident, told the police he was returning home on his bike when he was intercepted by the three. “They asked Sharma for his registration papers. When Sharma started taking them out,one of them took out a pistol and told him to hand over his belongings,” said a police officer. They took Rs 12,000 in cash, his mobile phone, gold chain and other articles before fleeing. The police have, meanwhile, registered a case of theft.

In the second incident, the employee of a jewellery shop in Ganganagar (Rajasthan) was robbed of 1 kg gold in Fatehpuri area of Central Delhi around 10.15 pm. The victim,Ratan, was about to catch a bus for Rajasthan when he was intercepted by a “policeman and four others in civilian clothes”,who claimed to be from the Delhi Police Crime Branch,a senior police officer said.

“They said they wanted to conduct a search. When they found the gold brick in his pocket, they reportedly told him it should be put in his bag. On the pretext of putting it in,they stole it,” the official said.
