Any ward in Gurgaon that maintains cleanliness standards for two straight months will get a reward of Rs 1 crore — the government initiative comes weeks after Chief Secretary TVSN Prasad launched the Solid Waste Environmental Excellence Performance (SWEEP) to address critical waste management issues in the city. Under the reward scheme, a provision will also be made to give an amount of Rs 50 lakh to the ward which performs well for a month, officials said.

Division Commissioner RC Bidhan gave the details during a review meeting on Saturday. Officials discussed activities under the programme in Gurgaon as Bidhan also took an areawise stock of the situation.

Bidhan said that the decision for the Rs 1 crore and Rs 50 lakh reward scheme was taken during a committee meeting organised under SWEEP, and an independent agency will check the cleanliness standards, instead of the district administration or civic officers.

The citizens of the ward will be able to use the prize money for the development of their area, officials said. During the meeting, Bidhan received ward-wise reports on the cleanliness campaign. This development comes ahead of the Chief Secretary’s visit on Sunday to inspect the progress of the work done so far.

He directed the officers to regularly monitor door-to-door garbage collection. The status of garbage at secondary points should be regularly updated through GIS mapping, he said.

Municipal Commissioner Narhari Singh Bangar said that 25 bulk generators of construction and demolition waste in the city have been identified. FIRs have been filed against four, and fines have been issued to 19 tractor-trolleys, officials said.
