Designer Nikhil Mehra ‘s wife Vidushi is debuting in Bollywood with Aisha

Fashion week regulars will recall the striking Vidushi Mehra seated in the front row, cheering wildly during designer husband Nikhil and brother-in-law Shantanu’s shows. Few know, however, that Mehra is an avowed theatre enthusiast, who has acted in several theatrical productions herself, and has recently bagged a role in the Rajshree Ojha-directed Aisha,a screen adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel Emma. “I was rehearsing for a play when I met Amita Sehgal, the casting director of Aisha. She told me about the role,I did a quick screen test and then suddenly,I was packing my bags and heading to Mumbai,” she laughs. The movie has actor Sonam Kapoor in the lead role opposite Abhay Deol, who plays Mr Knightley. Mehra plays Kapoor’s elder sister in the movie.

Mehra says her interest in acting dates back to childhood. “I did plays through school and college and was part of a professional theatre group called Kid’s World, which specialised in musicals and rock operas. But 15 years ago, acting wasn’t considered much of a profession,so I studied to become a banker instead. Post-marriage I quit my job and it’s only been a year since I have got back to theatre again,” she says, talking of the upcoming rock opera production of I Dream Theatre,of which she is a member. The play is slated to have 40 shows in Delhi and Mumbai over the summer.

The movie, which is now going through post-production work, had Mehra shooting for about three weeks in Delhi and Mumbai. “The director’s new; much of the crew was new. It was fun working our way through it,” she says. Kapoor, whose sister Rhea is the producer of the movie along with dad Anil, held a workshop to break the ice among the actors. “We all read the script together, did a few basic exercises and just got to know each other better. It helped ease out the unfamiliarity,” says Mehra, also a mom to toddler twins. Mehra says she did not have much trouble in portraying her character in the film. “I play a sister,a wife and a mother in the movie, all of which I am in real life. How difficult can it be to emote for these?”
