(Photo: Express Archive) The Maharishi Valmiki Infectious Disease (MVID) Hospital and the Rajan Babu Institute of Pulmonary Medicine and Tuberculosis (RBIPMT) in Delhi have been demerged, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said in a statement.
After merging in 2017, these two crucial healthcare organisations had operating difficulties, which prompted the decision to split them. “The well-being of our citizens is our top priority, and this separation will enable us to provide more focused and efficient healthcare services to the people of Delhi. We believe that both RBIPMT and MVID hospitals will thrive independently and continue to serve as beacons of healthcare excellence in our city,” Mayor Shelly Oberoi said on Tuesday while signing the demerger.
The merger of RBIPMT and MVID hospitals in 2017 had its share of challenges, affecting the delivery of healthcare services as the hospital administration struggled to manage both facilities effectively. To rectify this situation and ensure seamless healthcare delivery, the MCD has decided to demerge the hospitals.
A total of 1,034 people were working to administer the consolidated hospitals. Following the demerger, 846 employees will be assigned to Rajan Babu Hospital, while 215 employees and officials will be assigned to MVID Hospital. A total of 27 new positions will be created to support the effective delivery of services at these institutions. An advanced laboratory will also be established to enhance diagnostic capabilities.
MVID Hospital is Delhi’s only hospital to treat infectious diseases. “The decision to separate it aims to make it future-ready to effectively tackle emerging infectious diseases,” the MCD said. Rajan Babu Hospital, on the other hand, is renowned as a Center of Excellence in Tuberculosis Management. “This demerger intends to enhance TB research initiatives at the institution,” the MCD said in a statement to the press.
