With Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, failing to participate in scheduled rallies owing to ill health, The Indian Express has learnt that the Delhi Congress has requested its central leadership to rope in Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to take charge of the campaign for the February 5 polls.

On January 20, Rahul was expected to hold a rally in New Delhi alongside Congress candidate and former CM Sheila Dikshit’s son, Sandeep Dikshit, but he was a no-show. The next day, he missed the party’s centenary celebrations of the 1924 Belagavi Congress session in Karnataka.

On Wednesday, Rahul was scheduled to address the first of three consecutive election rallies in Delhi, starting at Inderlok Metro station in Sadar Bazar constituency. At the event, Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav told the gathering, “… we all are waiting for Rahul Gandhi ji. But due to his ill health, he might not be able to come… He has sent me a message to give to you…”

He then read out the message: “Today, I am unable to attend this meeting in Sadar. I know thousands of people who love me are present at this gathering today. I am sending my best wishes to all… I am confident that our candidate from the seat, brother Anil Bhardwaj ji, who holds a very important position in Delhi politics, and his other colleagues who are contesting elections, will do well. Keeping in mind their hard work, I appeal to all of you to work towards making the Congress win with a huge majority. As soon as my health improves, I will try to come to Delhi and especially to Sadar and meet all of you. Thank you very much to all of you. Jai Hind.”

A party insider said, “We’ve communicated to the central leadership to pass the baton to Priyanka ji to take charge of Delhi in the meantime. Although she was scheduled to join the campaign at the last stage, it will be moved forward… She is expected to take charge from next week.”
