In the wake of the massive Nepal earthquake which killed thousands, Jamia Millia Islamia has felt a need to incorporate disaster management study in its curriculum. Starting the new academic session, Jamia will offer a course in disaster management to students from all streams.
Elaborating on the programme, a university official said, “After the devastating earthquake which affected Nepal and parts of our country, the university feels that there is a need to incorporate disaster management and mitigation in the university curriculum. We are starting a Diploma Course in Disaster Management from the next academic session.”
A statement released by the university said applications for the course will be accepted from May 4. “The course is designed to support the government’s strategy for disaster risk reduction by institutionalising teaching, research and training in disaster management. It will be open to students from all streams. The focus will be on mainstreaming disaster risk reduction strategies, strengthening institutional mechanisms, community mobilisation and participation in disaster management so to prepare a disaster resilient society,” the statement read.

The diploma course will be conducted by the university’s Department of Geography and it has been formulated “to support Government of India’s strategy for disaster risk reduction by institutionalising teaching, research and training in disaster management”, the statement further said.
“The idea is to enhance the role of academic institutes like Jamia in preparing youths in the areas of disaster management through education and training,” the official said.
