With the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) waving a report stating that seven women from Bhatta village were allegedly raped by Uttar Pradesh policemen during the clashes there recently,a probe has begun though the villagers prefer not to discuss the matter in public.
At Bhatta village on Monday, many claimed that they had not heard about anybody being raped by policemen,Others, however, said they would speak only in court. We would not like to make wild guesses while commenting on such serious allegations. For us,a womans honour is supreme, and we would rather not lie about such allegations, said Dharamwati,a resident.
An octogenarian woman,Sudarshan Devi, claimed that residents of the village were aware of the identity of the people who had handed in the affidavits. Shokeen, whose leg is still in a cast, chose to differ. It is true that the police destroyed goods and assaulted us for simply fighting for our rights. But people who are making allegations of rape cannot be telling the truth, he said.
His house was badly damaged because of its proximity to the entrance of the village.
Jyoti Narayan,Senior Superintendent of Police (Gautam Budh Nagar),said a team has been constituted to investigate the allegations of rape. We have formed an all-women team that will go to the village and investigate the allegations. We will videograph people while recording their complaints, besides verifying signatures on the affidavits. Affidavits have to be verified and substantiated with strong evidence, he said.
Asked why the NCSC had intervened in the Bhatta-Parsaul case,Commission chairman P L Punia said though his commission listens only to cases pertaining to SCs,the government has authorised it to hear pleas of OBCs as well.
