Delhi Police Crime Branch, in a joint operation with Dadra and Nagar Haveli police, on Monday arrested a 26-year-old man who allegedly posed as an Assistant Commissioner of the Income Tax department and extorted money.
The accused, Rohit Kumar from Shajahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, was an assistant sales manager with BMA Wealth Creator, a call centre for insurance companies. Police said to achieve his targets, Kumar forced people invest in insurance policies, threatening them with Income Tax raids.
Police said on November 18, the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police received a request from SP, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, to track down Kumar. A team, led by Inspectors Sandeep Malhotra and Sanjay Gade, was constituted to find him.
“He was wanted in a case of extortion reported from Dadra & Nagar Haveli (UT). He reportedly posed as an assistant commissioner of Income Tax from Hyderabad and blackmailed people to invest in insurance policies. On the SP’s request, a team was formed and sent to his home town Shajahanpur. He has been sent to six days in transit remand so that he can be taken to Dadra & Nagar Haveli,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav said.
During questioning, Kumar told police that he had graduated from Swami Sukhdevanand Snatkottar Mahavidyalaya, Shajahanpur.
He came to Noida in 2012 and worked in several call centres in Delhi and Noida.
He told police he used to threaten customers to spend on insurance policies and lured them offering false bonuses on the policies, Yadav said.
