The Delhi Police Sunday said they busted a sex trafficking racket in the Paharganj area following a raid Thursday, rescuing 23 people, including three minors, and arresting seven people allegedly involved in the illegal operation.

The operation was conducted by several teams from the Central district police following a tip-off about an organised prostitution network operating in the area. “It was alleged that the accused were bringing women from West Bengal, Nepal and other places in Delhi and keeping them in a house in Paharganj and later sending them to various hotels for prostitution,” said Harsha Vardhan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central).

Ten of the rescued victims are reportedly from Nepal, said the police. “Based on surveillance and intelligence inputs about a trafficking racket in the Central district, our teams developed key information regarding locations of illegal activities,” said the DCP.

Investigators tracked the movement of victims transported to nearby hotels on scooters, said the police. Decoy customers were deployed to confirm the illegal activities before the police moved in. During raids at multiple locations, including a hideout house and several hotels, the police rescued the victims and apprehended the suspects. They also seized seven mobile phones and two scooters allegedly used to facilitate the trafficking operations.

The police filed a case under sections 3 (keeping a brothel), 4 (living on earnings of prostitution), and 5 (procuring or inducing person for prostitution) of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act.

The accused have been identified as Nurshed Alam, 21; Mohammad Rahul Alam, 22; Abdul Mannan, 30; Tausif Rexa; Shamim Alam, 29; Mohammad Jarul, 26; and Monish, 26.

The police stated that the victims received the necessary support and were sent to shelter homes while the investigation into the trafficking network continued.
