PCR calls dip during election

Police said none of the eight distress calls were serious and the disputes outside the counting centres had been sorted out by those involved.

This year’s Assembly election turned out to be peaceful,with police reporting little or no crime during Voting Day and that of counting.

On December 4,the day of voting,the police control room received 1,316 calls related to the election from across the capital. Police said the calls were about minor issues that were solved at the local level. Only two cases related to calls of December 4 led to registration of FIRs.

During counting on Sunday,only eight distress calls were received at the police control room. Police said none of the eight distress calls were serious and the disputes outside the counting centres had been sorted out by those involved.

Police said two FIRs were lodged on December 4 at the Jamia Nagar police station,where supporters of sitting Congress MLA Asif Mohammed clashed with members of Janata Dal (United). Police registered a case of assault against both parties. The other FIR was registered in West Delhi,where policemen were injured after a group of protesters led by a local BJP politician hurled stones at two senior police officers.

With heavy security in the capital,there was a massive reduction in the crime figures on December 4 and 8. On an average,the control room receives around 28,000 calls each day. However,on December 4,the control room received around 25,000 calls and on December 8,it received 22,000 calls.

In a bid to prevent violence during elections,police had detained 2,703 persons. Also,1,617 licensed weapons were confiscated by police before polls,which are now being returned to the owners.
