Patient’s kin pull out guns, beat up three doctors at AIIMS emergency

Three arrested after doctors go on strike.

AIIMS doctors went on strike for about six hours on Sunday, after three resident doctors were beaten up by a patient’s kin, with one doctor sustaining a fracture on his nose.

The doctors resumed duty late Sunday night after an FIR was registered for assault, three persons were arrested and more security deployed outside the hospital emergency.

According to hospital sources, a patient was brought to the emergency with a head injury on Sunday, where the senior resident doctors, upon examination, found it to be a fit case for consultation with a specialist in neurosurgery and called for a neurosurgeon.

But while the doctors on duty were examining the patient and administering emergency treatment while waiting for the neurosurgeon, the patient’s relatives got agitated and created a ruckus. “They pulled out pistols and beat up the three resident doctors in the emergency. One of the doctors was hit on his nose and fractured his nasal bone,” a resident doctor said.

The accused then allegedly fled the hospital in their SUV, even damaging the main gate of AIIMS. The hospital authorities lodged a complaint with police, who arrested three persons. The resident doctors demanded that armed security personnel be deployed outside the emergency to prevent such incidents.

Doctors resumed duty after security was stepped up outside the emergency and surgical emergency, where the injured doctor was admitted. Police said an FIR was registered at Hauz Khas police station.
