Panel to probe snag that held up Metro services

A day after technical issues with the Over Head Electification system left thousands of people stranded on the Central Secretariat to HUDA City Centre Metro line.

A day after technical issues with the Over Head Electification (OHE) system left thousands of people stranded on the Central Secretariat to HUDA City Centre Metro line,Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Managing Director E Sreedharan appointed a high-level committee to look into the issue.

The committee, headed by the DMRC Executive Director (Electrical),will study the cause of the incident and recommend remedial measures to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future. Metro services on the line were restored by 6 am on Saturday.

According to the DMRC,the problem occurred around 7 pm on Friday when the pantograph of a train going towards HUDA City Centre clashed with the OHE near Udyog Bhavan. This caused substantial damage to a portion of the overhead wires, the DMRC said. “The damage took place on the neutral section near Udyog Bhawan (an area where power supply switches from one source to another) and affected the pantographs of more trains which,in turn, affected the OHE lines further down towards Gurgaon.”

A team of over 200 engineers and technicians was deployed to repair the damage. At present,it is closely monitoring the movement of trains on the stretch. “Also, trains are being run at a speed of 30 km per hour between Central Secretariat and Udyog Bhavan as a precautionary measure,” a DMRC source said.

In order to clear the crowd that gathered at various Metro stations on Friday night, the DMRC ran four extra trains from Central Secretariat to HUDA City Centre after 11 pm on Friday night. In addition to this, the DTC ran 23 buses on the same route. According to a DMRC estimate,as many as 7,000 people had to be cleared from the Central Secretariat station.
