Kendriya Vidyalayas need to focus on technology-driven education to stay relevant in the changing times,M M Pallam Raju,Union Minister of HRD,said. Speaking at the 50th anniversary celebrations of KVs,the minister praised the journey of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan from 20 to 1,903 schools, while touching upon specific concerns the schools needed to deal with.

“The success story of central schools has increased manifold. From a humble beginning of 20 schools in 1963,the Sangathan now has 1,903 schools in its fold. But there are still some areas in which we lag behind when it comes to providing quality education. Technology-driven education is one of them. Our teachers need to constantly update themselves with current technology and make learning more interesting for the children,” he said.

Besides incorporating technology in education,he also emphasised on broadening students’ horizons by moving beyond the academic curriculum.

“The world is not the same as it was 50 years ago. We need to equip our students for the future by teaching them life skills. Art and culture,as well as community outreach programmes, should be a part of what they learn. It happens in public schools and it would be wise if we adopt these methods too,” he added.

Talking specifically about the transfer policy for teachers followed in KVs,he said,“Since long,we have had an arbitrary transfer policy for teachers. But,it is high time we institutionalise the transfer policy and set fixed guidelines for teachers’ transfers.”

The minister was speaking at a conference of principals of Kendriya Vidyalayas. More than 500 principals from KVs across the country participated in it.

In the two-day conference, principals deliberated on emerging trends in school education.
