Outer Ring Road flyovers wait for traffic flow report

The proposal to construct a series of flyovers along the Outer Ring Road to ensure signal-free movement along the stretch,is not likely to take off this year.

The proposal to construct a series of flyovers along the Outer Ring Road to ensure signal-free movement along the stretch,is not likely to take off this year. The Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC) has asked Public Works Department (PWD),the civic body in-charge of the project,to carry out a traffic simulation study to ascertain how construction of these flyovers between Vikaspuri and Wazirabad will impact the traffic flow and density along this stretch. This entire process is likely to take six months, according to PWD officials.

“In a recent meeting of the DUAC,it was decided that before starting work on this project,a traffic simulation study be carried out to understand how the project will ease and impact traffic flow in this area. This task will be given to School of Architecture and Planning. We will first have to take permission from the Delhi government before carrying out this study and the entire process will take six months,” said an official.

DUAC’s last minute meeting specifies that a micro simulation proposal of the corridor stretch is required to be submitted to the commission so that the scheme could be scrutinised in terms of the impact on the overall city area, not only in terms of the traffic circulation but also the urban design context.

The civic body had proposed making a series of flyovers from Vikaspuri to Meera Bagh, from Mangolpuri to Madhuban Chowk, from Madhuban Chowk to Mukarba Chowk and from Mukarba Chowk to Wazirabad. There is already a flyover at Mukarba Chowk. On the Ring Road also, there was a proposal to construct a flyover from Prem Bari Pul to Azadpur.Otherwise there is signal-free movement along the Ring Road presently.

This project to ensure signal-free movement along the Outer Ring Road which normally sees heavy vehicular movement is part of the Masterplan-2021. According to PWD,this project has been awaiting clearance from DUAC for a year now.
