A 20-year-old man was arrested by the Ghaziabad Police on Saturday for allegedly murdering his 60-year-old maternal grandmother on June 8 after she refused to give him money for betting in online games.
The suspect, identified as Vinod Kumar, hailed from Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh, and had been residing with his grandmother Harpyari Devi and maternal uncles Ashok Singh and Bhagwan Singh in Arthala, Sahibabad district, for about two months.
During his interrogation, the police said he admitted that he ran a fast food shop in Arthala and was addicted to online games for a year. He also revealed that he lost a significant amount of money in online games and was unable to pay the rent for his fast food shop.
Kumar further told the police that on June 8, around 3 pm, he asked his grandmother for money. When she denied, he strangled her to death after an altercation. Later, he left the house with Rs 2,000 and her earrings and opened his shop as usual.
Nimish Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Trans-Hindon, said Ashok Kumar had initially filed a complaint with the Sahibabad police after he found Devi in an unconscious state. “A team was formed and Vinod was arrested after we found the missing earrings at his home after initial investigation and electronic surveillance,” he said.
