An MCD school principal who set up a computer lab with the help of an NGO, another principal from whose school eight students cleared JEE (Advanced) and 42 qualified for NEET — they were among 118 teachers and principals presented the State Teachers’ Awards by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Tuesday.

Awards are given in 14 categories, including those for teacher educators. As many as 14 teachers and principals from MCD schools, 13 from private schools, and one from an NDMC school were given the award, apart from those from Delhi government schools.

The two “Face of DoE” awards, which go to Delhi government school employees, were given to Seema Tomar, a drawing teacher from SKV Andrews Ganj, and Shishupal Singh, a Physical Education teacher.

Speaking at the event held on Teachers’ Day, Kejriwal said, “Teachers and students have a unique relationship. This year, so far, around 1,300 students from Delhi government schools have cleared JEE and NEET exams. I interacted with those students one day and their parents, teachers, and principals were also present. Around 25-30 students from different schools situated in different parts of Delhi shared their experiences… Every student gave credit for their selection to their teachers… who went out of their way to help them… They

came from poor families and at times, did not have the resources to buy books. Their teachers bought the books.”

The CM said he still remembered his school teachers.

“I still remember my teacher Dua ma’am, who used to teach me Sanskrit in Class IX. Malik ma’am used to teach me Geography, and Chopra ma’am Biology. Students remember their teachers for a lifetime,” he added.

This year, the government introduced a special category to appreciate schools that recorded the highest average attendance in the last academic year. The Government Girls Secondary School, Phase III Mayur Vihar, bagged the award, with 73% attendance.

A new category for student attendance will be announced as a distinct award.

Addressing teachers at the ceremony, Education Minister Atishi said, “The government provides facilities in schools for education, but real education is provided by teachers in the classroom. Teachers have a very significant role to play in the lives of children. When a child comes to school at the age of 4, they consider their teachers no less than gods. Children regard their teachers as their role models and 90% of them dream of being like their teacher in the future at that age… While teachers may be teaching just a subject in the classroom, the development of students as better human beings in the future depends greatly on the behaviour of their teachers.”
