Delhi High Court grants bail to Olympic wrestler Sushil Kumar in Sagar Dhankar murder case
Sushil Kumar was the main accused in the murder of a junior wrestler Sagar Dhankar in May 2021.

The Delhi High Court Tuesday granted bail to Olympic wrestler Sushil Kumar, who had been in jail for more than three years over the 2021 murder of wrestler Sagar Dhankar in the city’s Chhatrasal Stadium.
Dhankar, who had competed in the 97-kg Greco-Roman category, was beaten to death in a clash involving two groups at the stadium on May 4, 2021.
Sushil Kumar’s name cropped up when a video of the incident purportedly featuring him came to light. He was arrested after a lookout notice was issued for him as he was on the run.
On July 22, 2024, the trial court refused to grant Sushil Kumar bail. The sessions court in October 2022 framed murder charges against Kumar and 17 others in connection with the killing of 27-year-old wrestler Dhankar. The court said there was a strong case of murder and attempt to murder after a conjoint reading of witness statements, along with the location chart, medical evidence and other evidence mentioned in the chargesheet.
The court also framed charges under Indian Penal Code sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 120 B (criminal conspiracy), 142 (being a member of unlawful assembly), 148 (rioting armed with a deadly weapon) and 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object).
The police have accused Sushil Kumar of conspiring with his associates from Delhi and Haryana and asking them to attack Dhankar.
Arguing for bail in the court of Justice Sanjeev Narula, Sushil Kumar submitted that only 31 of the 222 witnesses had been examined thus far.
A detailed order of the high court is awaited.
