Nurses on protest meet Kerala CM

“I will recommend to the Resident Commissioner of the Kerala House to take up the matter along with various Members of Parliament from the state. I will also write to the concerned Union and state ministers of Health and Labour and bring the issue to the notice of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit,” Achuthanandan said.

The hospital nurses have been on strike since February 2 seeking increase in wages,yearly increment and better service conditions. The nurses are demanding they be paid Rs 18,000 as minimum basic salary against the current Rs 4,075.

Achuthanandan also promised to look into the allegation that the Non Resident Keralites Affairs department (NORKA) regional office did not respond to the nurses’ call for assistance. Advising the nurses to keep their chins up,he said various workers’ unions will be asked to take up the matter.

“Incidentally,I am here to attend a meeting on price rise,which is the cause of so much trouble for these nurses,” remarked the CM. Most nurses are struggling to pay their student loans,with monthly interest up to Rs 3,500.
