The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has decided to levy an entry fee at one of its parks in Dwarka to “upgrade facilities” and “get partial reimbursement”.

Users will now have to pay Rs 20 as a daily entry fee to use the Sector 16D DDA park and plantation; they can also get a monthly pass for Rs 200. Senior citizens have to pay half the rate, and foreigners have to pay Rs 100. Entry for children (up to 13 years) is free.

“We are levying fees only on parks where substantial expenditure has been incurred to upgrade facilities to give a better environment to citizens and getting partial reimbursement of running expenses. Most DDA parks are still free and citizens can choose which one they prefer,” a DDA spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said a “deliberate and mischievous politically motivated campaign” is “being engineered by a particular political party” against this move.

To be sure, out of DDA’s 771 parks, entry to only three parks is chargeable. Entry to Baansera and Asita East, both redeveloped parks on Yamuna’s floodplains, became chargeable after redevelopment. 16D Dwarka is the third.

“Moreover, users of these parks themselves have expressed satisfaction over charging of these nominal fees since it ensures that entry of anti-social elements, drug addicts and vagabonds is restricted, thereby ensuring safety,” the spokesperson said.

“Additionally, charging fees in these aesthetically developed parks will deter vendors entering the premises, ensuring cleanliness,” he added.
