Indicating its ire at the failure of the Delhi government and the municipal corporations to take steps to clean drains and prevent waterlogging, the Delhi High Court Thursday warned of contempt of court action against senior government officials if the work was not completed in accordance with rules.
The bench of Justice Badar Durrez Ahmed and Justice Ashutosh Kumar decided to issue orders “directly to the officials” after Delhi government standing counsel Rahul Mehra argued that senior bureaucrats in the city were “not under the control” of the AAP government, and files moved for work were stalled due to the dispute over power sharing between the government and the Lieutenant Governor. “We are not concerned about who is government and who is not,” said the bench, which directed the chief secretary of Delhi to take steps to pay compensation to the family of an 8-year-old boy who died after falling into an open sewer in Shakurpur earlier this year.
