Citing non-compliance of fire safety norms and absence of registration under the UP Coaching Regulation Act 2005, Gautam Buddha Nagar’s district inspector of schools (DIOS) Thursday issued an order to shut down 10 coaching institutes in Noida and Greater Noida.

Earlier, the department had issued directives to 54 coaching institutes, including these 10 institutes, to follow fire norms as well as UP’s coaching law.

The action has been taken in the backdrop of the fire that broke out on June 15 in a building in Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar, which houses several coaching centres.

“If someone wants to run a coaching centre, they are free to do it. But do not risk lives of the students. If a mishap occurs, who will be responsible? We saw what happened in Mukherjee Nagar. We do not want a repeat of such incidents,” said Dr Dharmveer Singh, DIOS, Gautam Buddha Nagar.

He further said if coaching centres get the requisite approvals on fire safety and registration, they would be able to continue operations. “We had sent a letter to 54 coaching institutes, directing them to get fire safety approval and registration done. Some of them have sought an extension to complete these formalities, but these 10 institutes did not reply. We are running a drive and identifying such violators through different sources,” said Singh.

The department Friday also issued a notice to 12 new coaching centres in Noida Sector 62 to get the required approvals by June 26. “Under provisions of Uttar Pradesh Coaching Act, 2005, it is mandatory to get registration before operating a coaching centre. Also, before registration, it is necessary to get fire safety certificate from fire department…,” stated the order issued by DIOS.

It further stated: “On June 15, the district magistrate office also issued an order that strict action will be taken against those who do not have these approvals. You (coaching centres) are illegally running coaching institutes without fire safety norms and registration. You are directed to get these approvals on time or the coaching centre will be sealed with a fine.”
