In the first game of his $15,000 ITF Futures match on Wednesday,Yuki Bhambri took a while to hold on to his serve. He eventually managed to win it after playing it all the way to deuce, but the struggle in his first service game was just a mere starting trouble as he eventually defeated Ashwin Vijayaragavan 6-1 6-2.
In between,he had to deal with a service break,a couple of double faults,a medical break for his opponent, but the quarter-final spot arrived in due course. He will play fifth seed Divij Sharan for a place in the semi-finals.
It was again the Delhi players favourite shot the forehand – that did the damage early on,meaning he would grab a 5-0 lead before allowing Vijayaragavan a chance to get on the board. The sixth game was the only one he managed to win in the first set.
Early break
In the second,a double fault on break point gave the junior world No 1 an early break, and though he had to face two breakpoints in his own serve in the next game,he managed to win it for a 2-0 lead. The advantage became a double break in the fifth when Yuki reeled off a series of winners off his backhand,at the net,and another was lobbed to make it 4-1 in his favour.
The next game, though, would see him losing a rare game on serve, aided chiefly by a double fault. But Vijayaragavan returned the favour in the next,as a double fault on break point gave Yuki a 5-2 lead and a chance to serve out the match.
Big upset
UNSEEDED Ashutosh Singh pulled off a big win on Wednesday, knocking out third-seeded Hyun-woo Nam. The Korean,a regular visitor to the DLTA courts, looked out of sorts in a 3-6 6-3 6-2 defeat. Ashutosh will play PC Vignesh for a semi-final place after Vignesh defeated seventh seed VM Ranjeet 6-3 6-2.
Divij Sharan had to wait till the tie-break before he won the first set against Purav Raja, but had a relatively easier time in the second,as he won this match 7-6 (1) 6-2. Eighth seed Rupesh Roy set up a quarter-final match with second seed Vishnu Vardhan after he beat Ronak Manuja 6-4 6-2. Vardhan had earlier defeated Vijay Kannan 6-4 6-3.
