‘No leopard movement’, says Forest dept after search at JNU and IGNOU; camera traps to be set up
Such calls often turn out to be cases of mistaken identity with other large cats or animals, the official added

The Forest department on Saturday conducted searches at the campuses of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) following a reported leopard sighting. However, officials confirmed that no signs of leopard movement were found.
A department official said the team received a call claiming that a leopard had been spotted in JNU on Friday night. “Our staff conducted a thorough search, but no signs of leopard movement were found. There were no footprints either,” the official said.
Such calls often turn out to be cases of mistaken identity with other large cats or animals, the official added.
“Still, since we received the report, our teams verified the area. No leopard was found,” he said, adding that camera traps would be set up as a precaution.
According to sources in the JNU administration, the department was alerted and spot verification was conducted. Following the search, a precautionary advisory was issued by hostel authorities.
The notice read, “All residents are hereby informed that a leopard was seen in JNU campus by a resident of Kaveri Hostel. So, everyone, be very careful and vigilant and follow some steps.”
The notice further urged residents to keep doors and windows closed, move around in groups, turn lights on public areas and corridors, and close bathroom doors. It also advised students to stay vigilant on the way towards Jhelum Hostel, Old transit house (behind the canteen) and JNU stadium.
