New look Kashmere Gate ISBT opens Jan

The revamped Maharana Pratap ISBT at Kashmere Gate will open to public in January, though the work for Phase-I of the upgrade will continue till March, said Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System.

The revamped Maharana Pratap ISBT at Kashmere Gate will open to public in January, though the work for Phase-I of the upgrade will continue till March, said Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS).

“This has been achieved despite the delay caused by the non-availability of space. With the buses operating and offices still functioning from there, the work progress had been considerably slow,’’ said DIMTS spokesperson.

The Phase-I revamp is being done at a cost of Rs 75 crore.

At present, around 50 per cent of the buses from this terminal have been shifted to Anand Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan ISBTs. The terminal usually caters to at least 2,000 buses.

“UP and Uttrakhand Roadways buses have been shifted to Anand Vihar ISBT and Rajasthan Roadways has been shifted to Sarai Kale Khan ISBT,’’ said an official from the Transport department. Buses to Punjab,Haryana,Himachal Pradesh, etc, still run out of Kashmere Gate.

In the Phase-I,work was undertaken only at the departure block of the terminal.

The commuters, however, still continue to struggle as the completion has missed its deadline. “There is no place to sit here. Everything has been dug up and the entire area is filthy. Out of desperation,I had to sit on the ground,’’ said Ravi Tiwari, who was traveling to Punjab.

The interior area is being be given an international look. Link and departure block are being given a granite flooring. Development of open space with food court and modern restaurants will also be taken up. This area will be air-conditioned along with the waiting and ticketing areas,’’ said the DIMTS spokesperson.

Display boards and LCD screens will also be installed along with escalators, elevators and foot overbridges. Complete CCTV surveillance system, security equipment, boom barriers, building management system and access control system have also been planned.

The bus bay capacity will also be increased and the existing foot overbridge will be connected with departure block of ISBT. Cement concrete road will be made in place of bituminous road.

“As part of the second phase, three basements will be constructed in the new block to provide parking for 78 buses,384 cars and 847 two-wheelers. The estimated cost of the redevelopment project for this terminal is approximately Rs 124 crore,’’ said a Transport department official.
