NDMC ready with pilot project for 24×7 water in its areas

Two years after it was conceptualised, the New Delhi Municipal Council has completed its survey for the pilot project that will ensure uninterrupted water supply to its residents. The tendering process is expected to start soon.

“We started it as PPP project,in collaboration with Delhi Jal Board. It was conceptualised when DJB was starting its PPP projects to provide water round-the-clock. The private partner was supposed to handle water supply and billing. But after residents’ welfare associations and others protested against privatisation of water,we decided to run this project on our own,” a senior official at the council said.

Bharti Nagar was chosen unanimously as the colony where the project will be started. “Bharti Nagar has mixed dwellings — commercial, residential, government units and flats of Members of Parliament and MLAs. We have decided to give uninterrupted supply of water to the colony,” the official said.

According to the survey, almost 30 per cent of water pipelines in the colony need to be changed. The council has changed 80 per cent water meters in the colony and new underground water reservoir will not be needed, officials said.

“Bharti Nagar, and all other colonies, get water for two hours in morning and two hours in the evening. There is a demand of 225 MLD of water. The need to change pipelines arose from the fact that we found 12 per cent loss of water happens in distribution process, whereas 1 per cent loss happens from water reservoir. We get 120 MLD from the Jal Board and 10 from our own reservoir. We have 21,900 domestic water connections and 3,765 non- domestic connections,” the official said.
