NCRB data: In Ghaziabad, violent crimes up in 2022; murders by 144%

A total of 136 such cases were registered in 2021 and 140 cases in 2020 in the district.

Cases of violent crimes such as murder, kidnapping and abduction; crime against women, children and people belonging to the Scheduled Castes; economic offences; and cyber crimes saw an increase in Ghaziabad in 2022.

The latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report shows that total crimes, registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Special and Local Laws (SLL), however, have decreased in the district. A total of 13,207 IPC and SLL crimes were registered in 2022, which is around 25% less than 2021, when 16,495 crime cases were registered.

However, violent crimes such as murder, dowry deaths, rape, robbery, and kidnapping and abduction has increased in the district. Data shows that a total of 525 violent crimes were registered in 2022 — an increase of 43% from the previous year. A total of 367 cases of violent crimes were registered in 2021 and 279 in 2020.

Violent crimes of 2022 constitute 61 murder cases, 32 dowry deaths, 66 attempts to commit murder, 99 cases of causing grievous hurt, 68 rape cases, 55 of kidnapping and abduction, and 51 of robbery.

The NCRB report also shows that there has been a 144% increase in murder cases in Ghaziabad. A total of 25 murder cases were registered in 2021 and 23 in 2020. As for kidnapping and abduction, a total of 55 such cases were registered in the city in 2022 — up from 50 in 2021 but less than 78 in 2020.

Similarly, crime against women in Ghaziabad has seen an 80% increase. A total of 1,063 such crimes were registered in 2022, out of which 611 cases pertained to cruelty by husband or his relatives. In the previous years, while 591 cases of crime against women were registered in 2021, 341 cases were lodged in 2020.

Dinesh Kumar P, Additional Commissioner of Police, Ghaziabad, said, “We have recently opened 20 pink outposts (Chowki) in the district, which are designed to assist women victims file complaints. We are hopeful that this will help in reducing crime against women.”

Data shows that there has been an increase of around 39% in crimes against children. A total of 189 such cases were registered in Ghaziabad in 2022, out of which 134 cases were registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and 50 regarding kidnapping and abduction of children.

Ghaziabad saw a higher number of cases regarding economic offences and cyber crimes as well as compared to previous years. A total of 1,024 cases of economic offences were registered in the district in 2022 out of which 365 were of criminal breach of trust and 649 regarding forgery, cheating and fraud. The figure is around 72 per cent higher than 2021 and 2020, when 595 and 567 cases respectively were registered.

Similarly, a total of 626 cyber crime cases were registered during the said period, which includes 501 related to cheating by impersonation by using computer, 102 cases of transmission of sexually explicit acts, and 10 cases of violation of privacy. A total of 451 such cases were registered in 2021 and 756 in 2020.

Commenting on this, the additional police commissioner said, “As far as (dealing with) cyber crimes are concerned, we have got more manpower now after the implementation of a commissionerate system in the district. We are regularly giving technical assistance to the policemen so that they can solve the cyber crimes. Cyber cells have been created in a number of police stations.”
