Multiple Exposure

A three member group from the Media and Communication department,Jamia Milia Islamia, has won the Sony World Photography Award in the ‘Student Focus’ category in Cannes. “We worked so hard,I knew we would win it,” says Professor Farhat Basir Khan, who had accompanied his students,Pranab Kumar Aich and Neal Karthik,to the Cannes awards ceremony.

Earlier this year, the group was chosen to represent Asia after their photographs Fallen Angels and With Each Diamond Eye were judged the best from entries from 10 Asian countries.

At Cannes, the team was given a day to work on the theme ‘Waste and Want’. Contestants were asked to portray the opposing aspects of the city through two images; representing the glamour as well the dark side of the glamour. Khan says that using oodles of imagination and a sprinkling of luck, they produced the two winning entries — Cry of the Big Cat and Midas Touch. “As we walked the streets searching for the right subjects,we found that people would not get irritated and traffic would halt for us,” explains Khan. In Cry of the Big Cat,a painting of a tiger on a wall appears as the backdrop as a woman carrying a bag with a tiger imprint passes by. In Midas Touch,a girl is shown taking a furry golden poodle for a walk.

This award has assured the group a place in next year’s awards contest as representing India. “Now,we have to raise the bar yet again,” says Khan.
